Q&A: What can my city do to be more “eco-friendly”?

What can my city do to be more “eco-friendly”?
Inspired by Yahoo’s search for the most “eco-friendly” city (and knowing mine isn’t going to win…), I am wondering what steps a small town can take to reduce CO2 emissions and help the environment. How can I help and how can I voice my suggestions to politicians?

Implement recycling programs, get companies to stop with all the air pollution, people starting taking mass transit or bike instead of driving to work. Call city hall and see what steps you can do.

There are lots of ways to be eco-friendly (and also it surprisingly saves a lot of money at the same time.)
1)You can recycle. Easy way to do that is to have a few different garbage cans only for one certain item. For example: next to my computer I have a garbage bag (made out of paper bag) just for paper because my computer area is where I use the most paper (and look though my bills) then in the kitchen (other then the normal garbage) is where I have the plastic garbage (in plastic bags) also one for tin cans as well.
2)Open up the windows more often. Let the light and the fresh air come in. Other then saving energy (that power plants give) this will also save you money on electricity. Try to talk your town into having solar and/or wind powered energy. (even thought you need to buy those equipment) In the long run it will save the town money on top of being eco-friendly.
3)Buy organic foods. First off this is heathier for yourself; second, it doesn’t involve factory farming which is a heath hazard for you and the environment. Factory farming damages the environment of the area it’s in. Third, you would be supporting normal farms instead. What is there to lose? Yes it is sometimes more expensive but think of it this way, do you want to spend your money on healthy food or tons of doctors bills years down the line? I hope this helps ^_^
Here’s a ”grass roots” approach. You must learn and then educate the people in your city about the three ”R’s”. Ever heard of ”Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” (the three R’s)? Major corporations are implementing it but if every individual were to practice it as well the effects would be immense.

Have it announced at the local schools. Make a poster in ”Word” and post them in stores. There’s a lot you can do, if you really want to!
I think the first thing that you can do is to insist, if your town doesn’t already have one, on a curbside recycle program. When recycling is done curbside, people are more likely to do it. Write your local government agents about it, but better yet, make an appointment to TALK to someone about it.
You can also get the word out about switching all regular light bulbs to CFL light bulbs by asking your local newspaper and news stations to run a story about it or run an ad for the light bulbs. If you pester the media long enough, I think eventually someone will listen. (That same theory applies to the government as well.)
There are SO many things that you can do, but if your town is just starting this process, then I think that the two I mentioned are a great start and will keep you busy for a little while.
~Cheers!~
Talk to municipal agencies and public/private schools about switching to biodiesel at least in summer months. (ethanol isn’t very eco-friendly because it needs so much energy to distill.)
If there’s a municipal power company, talk to them about buying wind/solar at least for municipal buildings.
If you spread the word about helping the enviorment, start an
Eco club in your school, if you go to college, spread the word to help the envoirmentt, if graduated from college, when your at work during break time, spread the word to people. Start an eco club. When you’re at the goverment, pick being a democrat cause they care about the enviorment when you’re eighteen.
I am looking to do the same in any way possible hence my on-line petition, if you have a minute please take an interest…cheers
recycle, use energy saving light bulbs, take shorter showers, carpool, plant more trees, help clean up trash in the city
Well, hybrid taxis is a good idea. Using more hybrid community vehicles and getting people to use the commute would help the environment greatly. I dont know a sure-fire way to do this, but maybe someone else will.
Lead by example, but not get pushy about it. Going to the politicians sounds great, but I’m sure they’re already doing a few things. The problem with politicians is they look at every issues as either a loss or gain for them, if there’s nothing in it for them-or if making a few simple laws are going to piss everyone off, they won’t do it.
Being both a conservative and a captialist, this is what I would recommend. Start your own recycling company, offer free pick up service for items such as glass, plastic, and metal (i.e. junk appliances/cans/ect.,.) Take them to the nearist recycling center and cash in on others trash. Who knows, perhaps you can expand enough to provide bins for people to recycle, then you can have route like a trash collector.
Being really commited to the enviroment takes a lot of work, most of it done by yourself. Talking about it, and pointing the finger at those who really do nothing about it-in the end, accomplishes nothing.
Lead by example, don’t be pushy, and others will follow.
Oh, and on a side not, will you people please stop pushing low energy lights (i.e. compact fluorescents) on people. They contain mecury, which will eventually become very toxic in landfills because we all know that the bulk of people will not dispose of them properly.
Curbside recycling? Hybrid taxi’s? Small towns don’t have these things.
What you do is start crapping in your yard. I know that sounds disgusting at first but soon you will have the healthiest lawn in town. Your neighbors will be jealous and all want to know your secret.
It will spread throughout your town and county. People will be fertilizing their flower and vegetable gardens with their new found “miracle grow”.
It will save thousands of gallons of water every day. People won’t have to go out for fertilizer therefore conserving energy. Dog food consumption will go down meaning less animals being murdered. Even PETA will be happy.
Al Gore will show up at your house and beg for the chance to crap in your yard!!
